Department of Bengali
The Department of Bengali was established since the inception of the college in 1963. At that time, Bengali language and literature were taught at the Higher Secondary and General degree levels. In 1968 Honours was started. Ever since the introduction of the Honours Course, the Bengali department has shown pride in various fields. The role of the Department in teaching postgraduate level students of Rabindra Bharati University in distance education mode is very commendable. The department always encourages and guides their students for the uplift and prosperity which is reflected in their results and in career opportunities. Right from inception, the special emphasis of the faculty has been on strengthening the system of learning in Bengali language and literature. The Department is having a Departmental room with modern technological support, so the students and teachers can get academic help through this modern infrastructure of the college. Total Intake capacity of the Honours Classes is 165 at the entry level. The most versatile part of the department is our rich faculty members. Poet Pabitra Mukhopadhyay once added a golden feather to the crown of our college. He was a Rabindra Award winning poet. He was also the national poet. He edited the renowned little magazine ‘Kabipatra’ based on poems articles in Bengali language for nearly sixty years. Renowned writer Dr Nimai Pal was a good researcher and outstanding professor of this department. Besides former Professor Shuvendu Barik is a famous social activist and writer. His service is still continuing towards our Society. Dr. Banani Chakraborty, the long-time Head of the Department of Bengali, is becoming increasingly bright in the field of writing. She has already written several poetry books and reference books. She has been invited many times as a speaker abroad. Dr. Gopa Biswas is the present Head of Bengali Department. Her skill and responsibility as a teacher inspires both students and faculties. Saurav Samanta is one of the pillars of Bengali department and also a good researcher. Jhuma Bhandari has been handling various responsibilities of this department very efficiently for a long time. The same can be said about Sri Sanjit Naskar. Smt. Minati Hansda is another faculty member of Bengali language and literature, has increased the importance of Bengali Department with her sincerity and honesty towards her duties. Besides teaching in college, Abashesh Das is a very good poet, novelist and essayist. His contribution towards Children’s Literature is also remarkable. His marvelous anchoring speech spellbounds the audience. He gets invited to various events abroad. Arghya Chatterjee is also a poet and essayist. The Bengali department of our college arranged departmental seminar,UGC sponsored National Seminar, International seminar etc. Various famous writers and professors from abroad have joined in the discussion at national and international level seminars. Renowned thespian, Director and Actor Manoj Mitra, Bibhash Chakraborty, famous novelist Tapan Bandyopadhyay, Poet and essayist Dr. Parthajit Gangopadhyay, famous Novelist Swapnamoy Chakraborty, Poet Rafiq Ul Islam, Poet
Shamim Reza, Sujan Barua, Arun Shil and many more creative personalities delivered speech and our students enriched through those sessions. We observe the birthday of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar every year by arranging a special invited lecture in our Department.We arranged several Books Publishing ceremonies on various topics,so that our students can be encouraged by the events.The college magazine “Uttaran” used to be edited by The Bengali and English department form the very beginning. For the last fifteen years the faculty members of Bengali department edit the same.More over the Wall magazines “Ankur” and “Anwesha” are our pride for its quality.Some current students are very creative,they write poems and articles in little magazines.Our alumni are very much rich. Their contribution towards the society is also remarkable.
