Chemistry About The Department

Though the College was built in 1968 Department of Chemistry started its journey way back in 1978 consisting of one Laboratory covering 85 sq meter and a Balance Room cum Teachers’ Room in the first floor of the Old Science Block. The first post was created in 1978 and Dr. Nilanjan Basu was appointed as Lecturer in 1979. The second post and a Laboratory Instructor post were created in 1983-84. Dr. Saroj Kumar Maity joined in the second post of Lecturer in Chemistry in 1984 and Sri Dwijendra Nath Samanta was appointed as Graduate Laboratory Instructor in Chemistry in 1985. Dr. Saroj Kumar Maity resigned from the college in 1992 and Dr. Niyati Majee (Das) was appointed in the second post in 1994. Dr. Nilanjan Basu retired in 2013. Mr. Nanda Gopal Hudait M.Sc. joined as a Guest Lecturer, who again left the College in 2016. Dr. Palas Das, Associate Professor of Narajole Raj College, joined here in the vacant first post of Chemistry in 2017.

Initially the College was allowed to teach the Higher Secondary (10+2) curriculum. The B.Sc. two year General degree course in Physical Science was approved in 1983. The Higher Secondary section was terminated from the college in 2000 and Three Year General degree course was introduced in the college by Calcutta University from 2000. The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was introduced in 2019 and the Curriculum & Credit Framework (CCF) under the New Education Policy (NEP) was introduced in 2023. A well-defined Chemistry Laboratory is there for Practical classes. Now two new laboratories with modern equipments and teaching aids are going to be built shortly in Room nos. 63 & 64 in the first floor of the New Block above the Seminar room. The Department utilizes classes in both white board-marker as well as audio-visual through power-point projector mode. The Department of Chemistry organized a 30 hours Value-Added Course on Food Adulteration and Detection from 12.06.2023 to 22.06.2023.
